At-will employment allows either the employer or the employee to terminate the relationship at any time and for almost any reason. Employers may not terminate employees (even those who are at-will) for unlawful reasons. In Michigan, employees may not be terminated on the basis of their race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, age, disability status, veteran status, height, weight, marital status, whistleblower status, or for activities protected by labor law (such as joining or advocating for a union).
